Why its ok to get derailed

September 25, 2011

Yesterday I tried the trains out again. You’d think a kid that loved trains would want to play trains and he does.. for awhile. But before destroying the rail.  We experimented with making our own tunnels out of boxes and toilet paper tubes.   This seemed to hold his attention for awhile more.   I loved using un-toy objects to play with when I was a kid.  I always took those little plastic things out of the middle of the pizza and made little tables for my barbies.

I’m trying to use our trains (since we don’t watch Thomas) to re create our favorite movie… the polar express.

I had a box full of these peanuts.  I found them when I wanted to use the box as a tunnel. I thought we could use them as ‘presents’ to put in the sleigh to transport around.  For one thing, a bunch of small objects like that really makes Rett want to do his waterfall thing so making him battle that the whole time was really fun. He would put it into the sleigh but never referred to them as presents or seemed to understand the ‘game’ we were playing. When I tried to deliver them with Santa’s sled.. that was a little over his head too.  Not really an idea I had in mind when we started but I think this models more of ‘normal’ play.

We took Rett to see the lion king.   Its really hard to find it showing without it being in 3d. Really didn’t think he would leave the glasses on.   None of us had seen it in the theaters.  He really liked it. A couple of times he got pretty scared but overall, he was ok.  He really liked all the music.  I remember loving that movie as a kid.  I liked the circle of life theme and all that.  As an adult, I took some different things away from the movie.   Be proud of your children before they’ve done anything to deserve it.  It takes very little for a child to blame themselves for something they didn’t cause.   Some things are worth fighting for.  Evil doesn’t fight fair.   I think this movie is going to become one of those most watched movies.

Looking forward to our first speech session tomorrow.
