‘My God’s not dead, He’s surely alive. He’s living on the inside roaring like a lion’ – Newsboys

If you are a facebook friend, you probably saw the big announcement but Rett won the ABA scholarship that I applied for!!  He was given a full year of ABA, 10 hours a week with all testing and maintenance completely free. This is a fantastic way for us to try out ABA and see how it works with Rett which will then help us decide where to live in Georgia and what therapy we want to pursue in the future. It is just absolutely amazing. It also means I can finally sign my daughter up for dance class.  And that I’m not going insane with worry over if what we are doing is the best.  I really feel that this IS the best!

Tonight Dr. Coby (who is funding our scholarship) came to meet with us. Along with his wife, Rett’s two new therapists, another lady to watch the kids and someone to take pictures.  It was a full house. They met Rett, sat us down and discussed how ABA works and what we could expect from the program. They said things like ‘we want to be held accountable as if you were paying us’ and ‘we are so excited to be doing this’. Things that make me feel very good inside.

He also told us things like Rett has great labeling skills.  He has great request skills.  He has great eye contact and joint attention skills.  He has skills that were not taught and that if they have to be taught are not natural like someone without autism.  He told us that there is a group of children that benefit so much from ABA that they become unrecognizable within a mainstream classroom. And that a lot of these things that impressed them about Rett were trademarks of a child that can be in that group.  And I felt very good inside.

I told Tom on our way back from the beach trip that when these great things kept happening I felt that God was telling me that I made the right decision by moving.  Having a special needs child and having to make so many decisions is very stressful. You often wonder if you made the ‘right’ or ‘best’ choice. You cannot know what it would be like down a different path. Its a lot about faith in your therapists.  Today when Dr. Coby came he talked about how he and his wife felt led to give more to their church from their business instead of just their own personal giving but also felt led to start the scholarship. They spoke with their pastor and he pushed them to start the scholarship. And then Rett was chosen as their first ever scholarship recipient.  I want my son to be a testament to the way God can work in your life if you listen and follow your heart.  We took a leap of faith to leave our home, friends and my family. And God has rewarded us.

God speaks in the still quiet hours when you are wondering about making the right decision and says “Only believe”.
