Our First Week of Tot School!

August 10, 2012

This was our circus week to start off our tot school year! I’d love to tell you about all the fun things we did this week but honestly I was happy just to make it through the week and somewhat attempt teaching.

The kids have made such progress just over these 5 days. We only work 30 minutes to an hour each day but they have already gotten better about sitting at the table, waiting for the other to have their turn and willing to do extension activities with the manipulatives to stretch out the learning.

I have no idea where our do a dot markers are. So instead we used the ends of our paint brush things to dot our pages this week.

Which at some point turned into a finger paint free for all.

We also worked on showing our work off. So after every paper we went to ‘show daddy’.  Rett is now requesting to go show daddy and actually takes his paper to show him.  When I came in to the room after therapy yesterday, Rett pointed to his work he had done for Miss Starr and told me to ‘look!’. This is great!

We worked on identifying shapes.  They can both do heart, star, square, circle and triangle… Rett started identifying ovals this week and Evie said rectangle today so hopefully we’ll have all of these mastered in another few weeks.  We also worked on circus vocabulary. At first I handed the picture card to them and told them the word. Then yesterday I made them request by name the picture they wanted.  Today was their vocabulary test and Evie got all the words right and Rett just missed ring master. He called him ‘ring monster’.  Still pretty close!

We’ve been working pretty heavily on number identification.  Rett has lost a lot of the knowledge he had when we were working daily.  This number order puzzle seem to motivate him and he could do it all by himself up to 6 and then needed some help. I’ve been really focusing on 1-5 until he gets those and then going on.

We also worked on some name practice. Today Rett could put it all in order, say the letters and when I asked him what that spelled he said ‘Rett!’   Evie is writing her name from memory so don’t think we need to work on this.

So that’s been our week! Coupled with some circus apps I downloaded which the kids have enjoyed, its been a pretty laid back start to tot school. Next week we are doing dinosaurs!
