Evie’s First Speech Appt.

September 30, 2012

Evie had her first speech appointment with Miss Amanda this week.  I went ahead and had Miss Rachael do her eval since it was half price and had already forwarded the write up to her so she had a chance to sort of look over what Miss Rachael had marked as ‘areas of concern’.  Miss Amanda took her back and it sounded like they had a rather uneventful session (no screaming).

When she came back she said that she agreed with Miss Rachael and saw what she had noted.   Almost impossible to get her attention.  At first, she had no eye contact until the session went on for awhile.  Putting things to her mouth, not really in her mouth but just touching them to her face.  Stimming babble.  Unflexible phrasing.  High vocabulary, very verbal, extremely intelligent.

Miss Amanda’s opinion is that if we can get the eye contact and joint attention up, Evie will be fine. Sounds good.

On another note, Evie is now ‘reading’.  You can call it what you want.  So far she can do dog and cat, we’re working on bug and pig.  She can sound out but she also has them memorized and will say C-A-T Cat! every now and then during the day.  She is very interested and will have my write out her words on the magnadoodle during the day on demand.   It honestly sounds like we’re walking down the hyperlexia path.

The sad part is that Evie isn’t delayed enough to qualify for the deeming waiver or any state help so we’re looking at another totally out of pocket child.  It was $220 for the one appointment on Thursday for the two of them.  I think I might just do 30 minute sessions for Evie until Rett gets his deeming waiver.  We’re working on some stuff at home that we’ve already went through with Rett.  She picks up on everything so much faster than him.  It really sucks when you have to prioritize your children but there you have it.  One needs more help than the other one.

Great post! That’s the first thing to come to my mind when my Noah started having issues. Actually the first thing was is anyone ever going to love him. will he ever get married and have a life of his own. All very scary but honest thoughts. I keep praying this all just “blows” over…
