Memories I Never Thought I’d Have

October 2, 2012

When you get an autism diagnosis for your child you wonder what this means for them. Will they ever make friends? Will they be able to get a job? Will they be able to live alone and do all these things that you hoped they would?  There are big, scary unknowns ahead of you.

But there are also small scary unknowns right in front of your nose.  How long will it take for him to catch up verbally?  Is he going to have issues learning and retaining information?  Will he be able to play correctly so that other children will accept him?

And you work. You do the therapy. You read the books.  You have epiphanies on how to help your kid. You work on answering ‘yes’ through an entire box of mcdonald’s french fries and you look for ways to make him talk, make him engage, to plug him in.   And sometimes you see results.

But sometimes… sometimes you get the pleasure of turning around and seeing your 3 year old armed with a pot lid, spatula and scarf (his knight jacket, according to him) announcing that he is a hero and running around the room.  It is in the moments of memories that at one point you feared you would never get that the things you haven’t worked on mean so much.  Because the things he does without my help are more genuine and are usually retained a lot better.

There are still a lot of unknowns ahead of us. There is still a lot of work to be done.  But I thank God that my eyes are open enough to savor these sweet memories of my sweet boy being himself.   We celebrate his victories one pot lid at a time.
