ABA Meeting Update and Speech

January 13, 2013

I love Rett’s ‘taking a picture’ pose.  So cute.

A few nights ago we had Rett’s January meeting with his ABA therapist and our lead.  We do these every month to track his progress, work out any issues he’s having at home or in therapy and to make sure everything is working smoothly.  This month he had mastered five more squares on the MAPP.  Each square represents 20 or 30 things he has to be able to do before that skill is considered mastered.  He’s still working very fast!

We didn’t really have any behavior issues to discuss this time. Right after he turned 4 he seemed to have a behavior spike with whining and crying.   I think it might have been brought on by all the holiday madness but he’s since calmed down and both Kristi and I noted the rise and fall of the behavior without many interventions.  She was having him work for 8 minutes but is going to go back to working for 10 minutes now.  They work with a timer and Rett has really responded to having the timer manage their working and playing schedule.

Rett is currently working on tracing shapes, showing numbers on his fingers (hold up 4 fingers, etc), matching words to pictures, sorting and labeling categories and I’m sure a hundred other things as well!  Its hard to keep up with everything he’s working on since he goes through things so fast.  He has mastered block design with just laying blocks on the card. I’m surprised it took him this long honestly. I think he mastered it awhile ago but the next program wasn’t added. So now he has to look at the card and create the design.  We’ll see how that goes.

The only thing I really noticed during Amanda’s speech eval with him that he needed to work on was the identifying categories so I’m glad we are working on that now.

Its sad that we are now on the second half of our ABA scholarship.  It has really flown by and I am amazed by the progress and changes we have seen in Rett’s behavior and knowledge base.  ABA really was a blessing for us and I will be forever grateful for the Lundt’s who donated the scholarship.   I asked our lead if there was a weaning off phase and she is going to look into it.  I’m going to reapply for the scholarship of course but really doubt we get it since Rett is doing so well now.  But you never know!

Our lead is going out of the country for a month and a half so our next meeting won’t be until March.  She set all his programs up so Miss Kristi can master things out as they go along and continue while she is away.  It will be interesting to see how much progress he’s made when we meet next!

You really seem to have a great team in place for Rett! I’m so happy to hear how well he is doing, and thriving!
