Rett’s 4 Year Speech Eval

February 1, 2013

post1

Rett has his 4 year speech eval a few weeks back at the beginning of January and I just got his eval write up.  I was on pins and needles.  My main goal since we got this diagnosis is that he would be caught up by age 5.  So I was really hoping for a 6 month delay, but would be happy if we were less than a 1 year delay.  Last year at this time we were sitting at a 1 year delay.

Because I have some speech friends, I’ll post the tests and stats for them.

For articulation he was given the Clinical Assessment of Articulation and Phonology (CAAP).  This how he produces sounds as well as when he substitutes some sounds for others.  I can’t think of any examples now but let’s say /W/ for middle /L/ sounds.  He scored as a 2 year 9 month.

Rett’s oral motor was assessed with the Marshalla Oral Sensorimotor Test (MOST).  She made him do different things with his jaw/tongue and checked sensitivity.  He was in the normal range.

Vocabulary and language were assessed using a few tests.  The Receptive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test (ROWPVT) was given and he scored at 3 years 9 months for his vocabulary which is no surprise, the kid can label like there’s no tomorrow. The Expressive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test (EOWPVT) was also given and he scored as a 3 year, 3 month level.

Putting it all together and his final score came to 2 years, 7 months.

Not only are we not catching up, we are falling further behind.

I’d like to take this moment to talk about the amount of therapy we’re doing.  20 hours of ABA a week and 1 1 hour speech session a day.  And still… Can you imagine the child in the public schools that gets 1 30 minute of group therapy a week?  In Oklahoma I took Rett to daily speech therapy.  If we could afford it, I would still be doing that.

Evie is 2 years, 7 months old.

These tests just make me have a panic attack about how far behind we are and how far we need to go.  I’m still going to try to go for the Katie Beckett waiver. I need to pay to get both kids retested.  I would really like for Rett to have 2 1 hour sessions with Miss Amanda each week.
