Rett’s ABA meeting for April

April 22, 2013

My spaghetti face mess.    The one that has taught me so much about myself.  Both weaknesses and strengths.  I don’t remember time before him.  Not really.   Before Rett, before I was Mama… its all faded into the background of our life.   Rett was the beginning of our family and has been the center of it.   He means more to me than there are words to describe it.   I can’t think of a single thing I wouldn’t do for this kid.   Including filling out another scholarship form even though I think we have little to no chance of getting this scholarship again.   I’ll be doing that after finishing out this blog post.

We had our April monthly meeting today.  Which means we have two more months left for Rett’s scholarship.  It seems like I was just posting about it and yet it seems like we’ve had ABA forever.   If you don’t have a child with autism or you don’t live in Georgia, you might not realize how amazing this scholarship is.  ABA is intensive therapy that directly teaches skills that most children pick up on their own.  Everyday a therapist comes to our home and spends 2 hours of one on one time teaching Rett specific skills and knowledge.  They work on behavior and social things.  Its just amazing.

Rett has been mastering about 40 targets a month. Which is a little over one a day.  This is also amazing.   He’s definitely got a lot of intelligence.  April’s meeting was pretty laid back.  We have had a little more whining and crying since he figured out he doesn’t have to work while he does that, otherwise very pleased with his progress and behavior.  We are getting a new therapist, Bridget, who has been shadowing Kristi and will start on her own on Wednesday.

Two months is going to go by fast.  I’m currently filling out grants to get more funds towards IBS and also ABA intensive summer camp for Rett.   Hopefully something comes through pretty soon!  I’m believing that however this works out is for the best for him.  We’ve been so blessed to have this opportunity to try ABA out and see how it works for Rett and it truly is an amazing way for him to learn!
