Results of Evie’s 3 year Autism Eval

June 12, 2013

Yesterday we made the long trek BACK to Marcus Autism Center for Evie’s 3 year eval.  This is a rigorous test that includes ADOS, speech, Bailey and I believe Moore? and the Vinelynd parent survey.   Yesterday we did ADOS and Moore (or whatever it is, developmental knowledge and some speech concepts), today we did speech and parent survey. Both days she did eye tracking and today we got the results.

Today, Evie lost her autism diagnosis.  She is completely on level for her receptive and expressive speech.  Her cognitive abilities were 6 months in advance (I believe more but I may be bias).  She still needs to work on her eye contact but I believe this is due to her eye issue and will resolve itself as we get closer to getting the correct glasses and her wearing them for a lengthier time.  They did not recommend any more speech therapy.

I thank God for the family and friends that cried today as I called to share the news.  I told the ladies this was the best day of my life and it is.  I walked in with two children on the spectrum and I walked out with one.  Evie is still far from neurotypical and it will be interesting to see where she ends up falling in the spectrum of humankind in general.  Neurotypical children do not do 64 piece puzzles and write their names at 18 months.  However, I knew from the start we had nothing to worry about with Evie and I stand beside that.  She has a very bright, beautiful, happy future.   This also means that we can more completely focus on Rett’s therapy without a huge amount of guilt.

Where do we go from here?  There are a few things we need to work on at home and I will continue doing that.  Just basically keeping an eye on Evie and seeing where she needs some extra help and what the solutions might be for now.  Its been an interesting (almost year) of a diagnosis for her!
