The best things we did for Rett in 2013

Every year you are left wondering what more you should have done.  What different things you should have done. Or at least I am. Especially during eval time which is now.

The best things we did for Rett this year.

Even though ABA was only half a year this year, it definitely has been one of the most impactful therapies he has ever had.  We don’t have many behavior issues but it really helped with organizing his thoughts and completing tasks without getting distracted.  He can clean up his entire room, get dressed, take his plate to the sink, dump it out and put it in the dishwasher all without getting distracted midway and not completing the task.

Miss Amanda’s social skills group has also been an enormous help to us.

Rett has always wanted to be social but her social skills group teaches him appropriate ways to gain attention, ask for people to play with him and show interest in others. He just got promoted to the advanced social skills group and we’re very proud of how well he’s doing with her.

The other thing we did that has helped with focus/behavior and social interaction is to severely limit screen time.  No ipad, no tv, nothing except for 1 movie on Friday/Saturday/Sunday.  We can tell a big difference between getting screen time and not as far as stimming/tv talk/self control/ability to concentrate.

We are hoping this year to get Rett back into an ABA program and to begin OT.  I’ll be updating soon with how Rett did on his speech eval.
